Only a week left
With less than a week left in
Europe, I am trying to take advantage of all the things going on in Paris. Last
weekend, I ran 2024m with thousands of excited French people from the Ponte
Alexandre III bridge to the Eiffel Tower at night to celebrate Paris hosting
the 2024 Olympics. Everyone was given neon shirts and many people were singing
the French National Anthem and carrying Olympic flags. It was awesome to see
the excitement of the French people and run through the streets of Paris at
night.
The seventh arrondissement
is called septieme in spoken French and is on the left bank of the Seine River.
Since the 17th century, the wealthier people in Paris have lived
here. It holds many important French national institutions and foreign
embassies. There are many treelined parks in this neighborhood, which leads up
to the most visited paid monument in the world. The most recent population was
57,442 with a density of 14,045 people per square kilometer.
Tourist Attraction- Musee d’Orsay.
This a museum that used to be a railroad station from 1898 to 1900. It still
looks like a railroad station inside but has a variety of famous art works
including Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
Architectural Object- Les
Invalides. It is a series of buildings with museums and monuments related to
French wars. The gold dome pictured above contains Napoleon’s tomb.
Most Interesting Site- Eiffel
Tower. The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World’s Fair and was criticized
by many people for being ugly. It has transformed into a famous attraction and this picture is from the finish of the 2024 Olympic run. It has a long outrun of grass which is a great
place to picnic. For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the beach volleyball stadiums will be in front of it. Before the 2015 terrorist attacks, you could walk right under
and around the tower much easier than now. Since the attacks, there is
heightened security to go under the tower and a fence surrounding the bottom.
Commercial Business- Le Bon
Marche. This is a huge department store that was revamped in 1852 to be the
first modern department store. It offers a variety of shopping from Louis
Vuitton and Prada to gourmet food.
3 Star Hotel- Hotel Vaneau Saint
Germain. This is a charming hotel with a variety of rooms right next to a metro
station giving guests easy access to all of Paris.
The eighth arrondissement
is on the right bank of the Seine River and called huitieme in spoken French.
It is one of the main business districts in Paris and based on the 1999 census
employs more people than any other arrondissement in the city. It also includes
the Elysee Palace which was completed in 1722 and is the official resident for
the President of France. The population is 40,278 with a density of 10,381
people per square kilometer.
Tourist Attraction-Champs-Elysees.
This is one of the most famous streets in Paris known for its luxury shops and
cafes. The Bastille Day military parade and the final stage of the Tour de
France go down this street.
Architectural Object- Arc de
Triomphe. The arc is at the beginning of the Champs-Elysees and honors those
who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I is under the arc and all of
the famous war marches since 1871 including the Allies and French after WWII
went around the arc.
Most Interesting Site- Petit
Palace. This is a major museum across the street from the Grand Palace but is just
as spectacular. It has lots of history through paintings and sculptures and an
amazing center garden with a great place to eat.
Commercial Business- Abercrombie
and Fitch. This gate is the entrance to their store which is much nicer than
most Abercrombie and Fitch stores. When I first walked by, I thought the gate was for a luxury store instead of Abercrombie and Fitch.
3 Star Hotel- Best Western Plus
Hotel Sydney Opera. This hotel is in a great location near the Galleries
Lafayette and the Paris opera house.
The 12th arrondissement is on the
right bank of the Siene river and is where my apartment is! It is outside of
the main tourist areas of Paris but is still full of things to see and do.
There are many green areas and a great village to walk around with many great
restaurants and shops. The population of this neighborhood is 142,897 with a density of 22,408 people per square kilometer.
Architectural Object- Notre Dame de Bercy. This is a small local
Catholic Church in the neighborhood.
Most Interesting Site- Bois de Vincennes Park. This is one
of the coolest places I have been to in Paris. I rented the Velib bikes, which
have very faulty lock systems and app, but it is a great place to bike around.
There are a few ponds along and lots of trails making it the largest public
park in the city. There are lots people picnicking, slacklining, running and
doing other sports enjoying the beautiful weather.
Commercial Business- La Cure Gourmande. This is a chocolate
and cookie shop in the Bercy village. Their boxes have beautiful decorations
and when they walk in they give you samples of the cookies!
3 Star Hotel- Hotel Ibis. This
hotel is just a block from the Bercy park and very close to both major train
stations. It makes a great place to stay out of the busiest areas of Paris but
still a quick train ride from everything.
Paris has a wide range of neighborhoods
and this blog illustrates a variety of neighborhoods. The prices of rent vary greatly between each neighborhood. In the seventh arrondissement, the average
price for an apartment is 12.171 euros per square meter. In the eighth
arrondissement the average price is 10.762 euros per square meter, while in the
12th arrondissement the average price per square meter is 7.724 euros.
