Morocco!

Image
The first weekend after I got to Barcelona, I went to Tangier, Morocco with my teacher and a group of students. I meant to share these pictures earlier but I got busy with school and exploring the city. It was a super cool adventure to see a very different culture. We spent Friday on a guided tour that drove us around to viewpoints, camels, caves markets and more. On Saturday we had a guide take us to the city Chefchaouen which has all of its buildings painted blue. To close out the weekend, on Sunday we toured some more markets and looked at some museums. It was also a really interesting experience because we went during Ramadan. Ramadan is when Muslims fast all day and then eat after sunsets. During this time, they have a daylight savings and change their time to have sunset an hour earlier for the whole month. They also have a loud prayer call that goes off the at the mosque five times a day including a final time at 3am. Hope you enjoy these pictures! One of the viewpoints we ...

Beginning of Barcelona Neighborhoods

It is crazy that to think that I have been in Barcelona for 2 weeks already and only have 2 more weeks here. While exploring a lot of the different tourists sites and beaches, it was hard to decide what neighborhood to start my blog with. Each week will show three different neighborhoods and I decided to start with the Exiample district. This districts holds one of the most iconic attractions in Barcelona and our apartment and our classroom. Our apartment is just off the Gran Via street, which translates as the "great way". Within a 15 minute walk is the CEA main location which is where our class is. This district runs parrlell to the ocean along Gran Via all the way past Sagrada Familia. Architectural Object- Casa Batllo. Casa Batllo was created by Antoni Gaudí who is a famous Spanish architect. His work is found all at almost all of the most popular places in Barcelona. This building was made for the Batllo family as they gave Gaudi freedom to transform the buildi...

Introduction to Barcelona

Image
Hola from Barcelona! My name is Ashley Lodmell and I just finished my freshman year at the University of Utah. I also just finished my first of 8 weeks of studying abroad in Europe. For one of my classes, I am writing about the different neighborhoods in Barcelona and Paris as I am spending four weeks in each. I will write about the difference in things like rent, food, and popular attractions and compare the neighborhoods to each other. I am looking forward to use this assignment to explore more of the cities that I am so lucky to live in for a few weeks. I think it will be cool to compare the different neighborhoods and trends in Barcelona to the neighborhoods in Paris. I am excited to learn more about the culture in different areas of both cities.
